When considering a job in the trucking industry as a driver, these five facts about becoming a truck driver might be surprising and are definitely need-to-know — especially before you commit to this rewarding, yet challenging career.
1. You can choose your driving time. Many drivers like to wake up with the sunrise and follow the light of day, while others prefer to drive by the light of the moon.
2. On occasion, you can be asked to work 70 hours over an eight-day period. The maximum of time you’re allowed to drive daily (every 24 hours) is 11 hours. Once you hit 70 hours, you must take a full 34 hours off-duty.
3. Compensation is typically calculated by mile. However, some drivers are paid hourly. You can make more if you’re willing to haul hazardous material, oversize freight, or train other truck drivers.
4. Most drivers are expected to cover 125,000 miles per year. This breaks down to roughly 2,500 miles a week, which equates to 500 miles a day. That’s a lot of mileage!
